Tried to use my own images for Wikipedia but identified as copyright violation[edit]

Thanks a lot for all the timely help regarding my own artwork. Given the complexity involved, I decided to stop here and retract what I asked. Once again, thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnurs (talk • contribs) 01:20, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Track usage of all my uploaded files[edit]

I know there is this answer in the FAQ about a single file, but how can I track usage of multiple files (all my files)? I'd imagine a table with the list of files and the number of resources which use them, or types of resources, etc. Is there an internal or external tool for that? Is there a notification service ("hey your image is now used in this or that Wikipedia article" for example).  podstawko  ●talk  18:26, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm not aware of anything that does this (but please correct me if I'm wrong). This would be a great tool; I'll add it to my list of things to do soonTM. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 18:53, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Asclepias, I tried the tool, and I think this is what I've been looking for :). Thank you!  podstawko  ●talk  16:06, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for this reply. I had heard of Glamorous but assumed it had something to do with museums and such. So, I gave it a whirl and learned that I had 11,000 pix uploaded, slightly more than my estimate. 6,000 are in use which is a 'way bigger percentage than I expected. So, a smaller look found an even more glaring discrepancyː
Category "2009_Manhattan_photos_by_Jim.henderson" has 375 files.

Site Images used
en.wikipedia 384
Umm, ENWP alone uses more of these pix than actually exist? It cannot be. So, I saw that some of them are used in dozens of articles, which means the report is of how many articles have links to pictures in this category, and not how many of the pix are in use. Is there a way to find how many of them are in use? ̴̴ Jim.henderson (talk) 18:18, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jim.henderson At the bottom of the results of the full URL https://glamtools.toolforge.org/glamorous.php?doit=1&category=2009_Manhattan_photos_by_Jim.henderson&use_globalusage=1&ns0=1&projects[wikipedia]=1 (which Chrome mangles after "projects"), I see "Distinct images used", indicating that 259 distinct pix are in use.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:52, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Heraldry. Tincture systematization for a country[edit]

I made an alysis of tincture colours of heraldic symbols for modern settlements in Georgia. I want to publish my gathered statistics and try to make a convention for wikipedians, so there will be no random colourization. For example, compare File:Flag of Chiatura Municipality.svg and File:Flag of Vani Municipality.svg – these must have identical colours for azure, vert and gold. Also I need to notice, that colour codes for different tinctures have their differences and special aspects in every country, so I don't think this is good idea to take colours directly from some, e.g. German land's flag. Plaga med (talk) 14:44, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Plaga med: In short, in a controversial area, you are trying to impose your view as policy, and consensus be damned. That's not how this works. - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's not that I want to impose only my view, I don't see any conflict with the principle of consensus. Somebody must start to talk, to have a consensus. Some things can be strinct rules if there are RS, if there is not, we can just have some list of recomendations. So if I'll try to unify colours of those flags and Coats of Arms, there will be a central place to discuss changes.
It is my main idea – to have a single place to discuss such topic and to write down my argumentation for my edits. Plaga med (talk) 08:44, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Plaga med: Ah, sorry, this read as if you were trying to impose your view, rather than start discussion there. Are you at all involved with en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology or Commons:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology? I'm not sure how active they are, but even if they are moribund, reactivating them would probably be the best way to do this.
Do keep in mind, though, that on the same principle we apply to maps, we are very unlikely to say to anyone "you can't upload your version." We might be able to mark it with {{Fact disputed}} or something more specific; we might allow a process whereby a WikiProject could actually endorse some coats of arms and deprecate others; but it will almost certainly be a matter of templates, etc., not of deleting things that the main group thinks are inaccurate. - Jmabel ! talk 19:49, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I'll leave my question there! Plaga med (talk) 22:45, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image Upload[edit]

I want to make a Wikipedia page for Vijay Dewan. His images are available on internet, specifically those are mentioned in News Articles and Online news platform. So how can I use that picture in the Wiki page? What will be the attributes or tags I have to mention?! Subhamsr24 (talk) 04:17, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Subhamsr24: Are the images available under a free license? —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 04:33, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Subhamsr24: Most images on the internet are not free. If you can't find the image license, then it's probably copyrighted. 20 upper 07:38, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@20 upper, @Subhamsr24, What we are interested in is the onward licence. An item which is copyright may also be licenced for onward use. It is the lack of onward licence that dictates whether it is legitimate to upload the file here. If that licence is not present or is not obvious then there is no permission (licence) for onward use. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:33, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question. Need advice[edit]

there are some letters I have obtained from some press members. which has very historical value and importance. I was thinking to put them on commons to publish. which was also about same personality I wrote an article about but I'm not sure if it's acceptable SaneFlint (talk) 10:21, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Letter is from 1923. SaneFlint (talk) 10:26, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SaneFlint While the letter is 100 years old, I think, though I am no expert on copyright matters, that giving you correct correct advice will require the country in which the letters were written, and the (approximate) date of death of the writer, since the writer is, generally, the copyright owner. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 10:42, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perfect ill do that. Thanks SaneFlint (talk) 15:46, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
100 years is not actually quite enough to be safe. In most countries, death date of author will matter. For example, 70 years after the author's death is a common (but by no means universal) threshold. Someone can easily have written something in 1923 and lived into the 1990s.
Most of this information is pretty easy to find online (including Commons' pages on various countries' copyright laws). - Jmabel ! talk 19:53, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi it is known as Qasida which was recited on a historical conference which took place over 100 year ago. I have taken picture of that letter. Just curious how do i make it work. AS PICTURE WILL BE TAKEN BY ME SO I THINK there wont be any copy right issue. And i have details about a person who wrote this in 1923./1342H . HOPE IT HELPS SaneFlint (talk) 15:21, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SaneFlint That the picture is taken by you is not material if the item you have photographed is under copyright. The advice about the death date of the author of the letter is important, perhaps vital. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:27, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How we can know the material is under copy right already? Or there will be as i will be posting SaneFlint (talk) 15:34, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SaneFlint It may be allowed on enWiki to upload the letter under the doctrine of "Fair Use" which is not available on Commons. That is a separate conversation to be had, probably on w:en:WP:TEAHOUSE.
You will be able to research the copyright status from the answer given to you by Jmabel, above. Most of this information is pretty easy to find online (including Commons' pages on various countries' copyright laws). Commons:Copyright rules by territory is the key place to start. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:38, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think I was able to upload it. Thank you. I'll follow up that link to learn more about copy right stuffs:) SaneFlint (talk) 15:46, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi the person who wrote the Qasida died earlier in 1923.[ few weeks earlier] Than the Conference happened..
letter / Qasida was presented by Abdul Khaliq Kandyarwi, close aide of Maulana Muhammad from Sind. SaneFlint (talk) 16:38, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That leads me to a technical question. I have determined from that information that the files are {{PD-Pakistan}}. Should an upload of photographs of the PD document also have a licence for the photograph itself, or is the PD sufficient. @Jmabel Is this something you are familiar with, please? If not please will you point me to the correct place to ask the question? 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 19:13, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Certainly a faithful photograph of a PD photo creates no new copyright. Presumably the shadow of the photographer's hand is accidental, but I suppose in theory it could be copyrightable. I gather from the initial upload that they were claiming a copyright and offering a license, and it's probably cleaner if we acknowledge that, and indicate that the photo might have (licensed) rights independent of the document. The source should then be given as "original document photographed by [whatever credit might be desired]."
There are a lot of ways to do a split credit + split licensing like this. I know what I did at File:Asahel Curtis panoramic view of Galbraith, Bacon & Co Wall Street Dock and warehouse, Seattle, with sailing ships in background.jpeg is considered acceptable; I think there may be a template to do this more cleanly. - Jmabel ! talk 21:22, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel Thank you. I will set to work on that 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 23:28, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel following your advice I have done what I believe makes sense. If you (or anyone) feels I am incorrect, the files are in Category:Sayyid Ihsanullah Shah Rashdi. The intention to get it right is manifestly there. My implementation of that intention differs from yours, but is reflected jn the file history tab, and I think makes both elements clear, and agrees with the uploader's wishes as expressed during the upload process.
You make an interesting point about the shadow! 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 23:43, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If, at some point, there is an article about this album on English Wikipedia, then you can upload it to English Wikipedia for use in that particular article under "fair use". Commons does not accept fair use and English Wikipedia is very restrictive about it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 22:14, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You don't say what tool you were using, but -- if you haven't already -- try Special:UploadWizard here on Commons (as against trying to upload cross-wiki from Wikipedia) and see if that solves your problem. - Jmabel ! talk 06:42, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DONALDRSPENCER: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153. You have also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg image as a new user.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:59, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Корпоративные аккаунты / Corporate Accounts[edit]

Допустимы ли на Commons не личные, а корпоративные аккаунты для загрузки фотографий, принадлежащих не индивидуальным фотографам, а компаниям?

Does Commons allow creating corporate accounts for the purpose of uploading the photos being in corporate possession?

Englishrussia (talk) 05:28, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Englishrussia: There's been some disagreement about how best to do this, but as far as I know the following approach is entirely acceptable:
  • Create a separate account for each individual who will be authorized by the corporation to do this. Make the account name of the form User:NORMAL USER NAME (COMPANY NAME). (If they already have another account here, NORMAL USER NAME should match their other account.) Any account should be operated by a single person; if more than one person is involved, each should have a separate account along these same lines.
  • User should declare on the user page that this account will be used in their capacity representing that particular company.
  • Either (1) the company should post on its own website or public social media indicating that this account (or these accounts) are authorized to act on behalf of the company, and then the user pages can link to a URL that displays that authorization or (2) some representative of the company (it can be the same person, if they are in a position of authority at the company) should send email (preferably from an email account on the company domain) to the address described at COM:VRT (or COM:VRT/ru) indicating that the account is authorized, and someone at VRT can mark that on the user page once it is established to their satisfaction.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you need that translated and I can probably snag a Russian-speaker to make it clear in Russian. - Jmabel ! talk 06:40, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you, Jmabel. Your answer is perfectly clear and complete. Englishrussia (talk) 14:30, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Weird wikidata infobox[edit]

Can anyone work out why an inappropriate Wikidata Infobox is showing up for Category:Biographical-drama films of Italy? - Jmabel ! talk 21:01, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

At wikidata:Q8300509, wikidata:Q116974375 was listed as the category's main topic; removing that property fixed the infobox. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 03:41, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@CalendulaAsteraceae: Thanks! That was impressively wrong. - Jmabel ! talk
It's still strange, though. The Commons category is about Italy. The Wikidata infobox is about philosophers. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:53, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Asclepias: Category:Biographical-drama films of Italy is modeled on Wikidata as a category intersection, so it picked up an image from the item for a parent category's main topic. Normally that works well, but not here, because the "main topic" was bogus. - Jmabel ! talk 18:31, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not sure if my comment was clear or if I just don't understand how Wikidata works. What I mean is shouldn't that Commons category "Biographical-drama films of Italy" be associated with something like Wikidata:Q75611862, which seems the same topic, instead of being associated with Wikidata:Q8300509, which seems a different topic? -- Asclepias (talk) 19:01, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Asclepias: I think it should. It looks like Pi bot added the connection to Category:Biographical-drama films of Italia to Category:Biographical films about philosophers (Q8300509) in d:Special:Diff/1836343275. It claimed to be copying from Commons category (P373), but Category:Biographical films about philosophers (Q8300509) didn't have a Commons category (P373) before that. That seems a bit weird: maybe Mike Peel has some idea what it did. Anyway, I've fixed the problem as you suggested and the (empty) category now links to the correct item. --bjh21 (talk) 19:14, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There were a bunch of films with erroneous topic's main category (P910) links to Category:Biographical films about philosophers (Q8300509), it probably came through one of them (e.g., Socrates (Q3963888)), now cleaned up, e.g. [1]. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:50, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Vilahh: well, none of us can guess what you know something about! Is there anything where you'd say you have more knowledge than an average person? E.g. are you from somewhere that we might not already have very well covered, or study something or do something for a living that means you know something about something? Do you happen to be able to read and write a language that not so many people know, and could translate into that language either from English or from some other major world language? Happen to be more than routinely knowledgeable about cars, or some sport, or about the clothing of a particular region, etc.? If you can say what you know something about, then I can almost certainly give you a good place to start. - Jmabel ! talk 06:19, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm knowledgeable about religions. Vilahh (talk) 07:14, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vilahh: you could help categorize currently uncategorized images. For example searching churches without categories finds File:Church of St. Flannan, Killaloe - altar.jpg which should most likely be in Category:St. Flannan's Cathedral, Killaloe. It could also be included in Category:Interiors of cathedrals in Ireland, Category:Altars in Ireland and Category:Crucifixes in the Republic of Ireland. You can find plenty of similar examples. Other religions have similar categories. MKFI (talk) 15:24, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vilahh: Also, if you take photographs at all (or are inclined to, and photos taken with a phone are fine): are you willing to say where in the world you are? There are a lot of things we need photos of almost anywhere. - Jmabel ! talk 20:38, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Derechos del autor fallecido[edit]

Buenas, que pasa si el Logo (generalmente) creado por el derecho del autor fallecido, el logo estará en el "Dominio Público"?? AbchyZa22 (talk) 00:03, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@AbchyZa22: No, o no inmediatemente. - Jmabel ! talk 00:42, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

can i upload a image of a person?[edit]

ccan i? BouncinBaby (talk) 03:54, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If you have an "image of a person": Yes, technically you can upload it. But actually your question is so very unspecific, that no one will be able to give you the answer you expect. Is it a question about copyright or is it a question about personality rights or something else. If you would tell what person or if the image is online elsewhere and you name the link, then someone may be able to answer you question. Inserimento file audio video su wikipedia[edit]

@Riccardo Ottanta: This is the filename, as given in bold at the top of the relevant file page, e.g. "File:Pendolo di Newton a 5 sferette rallentato.webm". Depending on context, you may or may not need "File:". - Jmabel ! talk 19:40, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I need to move or copy images from Wikimedia Commons to a Wiki Page that I recently edited/expanded. The images were mine, and accepted in Wikimedia Commons.[edit]

I can find the image in Commons. I see the "use this file for wiki page". When I click on it, it just shows a pop up with file names (thumbnail or image). Nothing else happens. How do I get my own photos put into the wiki page? I tried to upload directly from my laptop to the wiki edit page and it says it's a duplicate already in existence. It won't let me advance further in the steps. Brooksy64 (talk) 20:15, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The code in the popup is what you use to insert the image (usually the thumbnail one). Just insert it in the place where you want to have that image in your article. That's the point of Commons - the files uploaded here are available in all the different language Wikipedias. --rimshottalk 20:38, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Reverting deletion nominations[edit]

Hello,

Over the past few months I have been nominating PNG files (uploaded by myself) for deletion, as they have been replaced by SVG files (also uploaded by myself). Examples of such files nominated for deletion can be found at Category:Diagrams of additional road signs of Ireland and Category:Diagrams of information road signs of Ireland. However, I've only recently become aware of the mass deletion request option. Many of my deletion nominations have not yet been acted upon, so I would like to ask if it is possible to withdraw the deletion requests I have made, and instead create a mass deletion request with all the applicable files included? Or would it be better to simply wait it out?

Thanks in advance. EthanL13 (talk) 21:08, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@EthanL13: COM:DR implies that it's OK to close deletion requests (DRs) that you opened as long as no-one has commented on them yet. The instructions for doing so are on COM:DR. Then you can open a new mass DR for the same files.
An alternative approach is to create the mass DR and then turn all the existing DRs into redirects to it. That's something I've done before for groups of DRs submitted on the same day, but I'm not sure it's appropriate when they're spread out over months. --bjh21 (talk) 22:21, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think that redirect approach would be fine, given that Ethan is the uploader (so there is no issue about notifying the uploader). Just make sure that if there have been any comments on any of these DRs they get copy-pasted to the new mass DR. - Jmabel ! talk 03:25, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks @Bjh21 and @Jmabel. I have created the mass DR now, hoping I have done so correctly. EthanL13 (talk) 14:16, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

DEMON[edit]

Dear Sir/Madam, I hope this email finds you well. My name is Shaik Nagur Pasha, and I am a student who engages in small research projects and translates scripts into Telugu. I am reaching out to request your permission to translate an article on demons, which is currently unavailable in Telugu. This translation would greatly contribute to my education and may benefit others interested in the subject. I kindly seek your approval to translate and subsequently upload it online. Hi, is this about translating the existing Wikipedia article? Wikipedia has a page for translators, which should be a good starting point. As a first step, you should make yourself familiar with editing Wikipedia articles - in particular, that these aren't usually uploaded but edited right in Wikipedia. --rimshottalk 15:39, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fenlander88: There is a general consensus on Commons that works published more than 120 years ago can be treated as being in the public domain even if we don't know when their authors died. So you can tag the files with {{PD-old-assumed-expired}}. Alternatively, you might use {{PD-UK-unknown}} if the author can't be determined. In either case, if you're uploading using the Upload Wizard you'll need to choose "Another reason not mentioned above" and enter the corresponding template (with the curly brackets). --bjh21 (talk) 11:23, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Straxman12: Hi,
Unless there is a mention of a free license, which I don't see there, you have to suppose that the pictures are not acceptable for Commons. You can search for pictures under a free license on Commons, Flickr, etc. Yann (talk) 16:00, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

btw im referring to like a link to the place where i can search Straxman12 (talk) 16:28, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Straxman12: Within a site, there is normally a search box. Beyond that, most people search with Google or Bing. Google, in particular, has some nice ways of restricting a search to a particular domain (e.g. "site:wikimedia.org" or "site:.gov", quotes not in actual search strings). If your question meant something other than that, you'll need to be clearer.
Speaking of clearer: probably 95% of what is on the Internet is neither public-domain nor free-licensed. One of the many reasons Commons is valuable is that we host about a hundred million files that are public-domain or free-licensed. Except for user-created content, these are mostly not easy to come by. - Jmabel ! talk 19:38, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mislabeled and Misrepresented Photo[edit]

File:Yakan.jpg#globalusage

Hello, the photo here is listed as a photo of a "Yakan couple," with the implication in that description and in the use by the various pages that this is a couple from the Yakan tribe of people in the Philippines. However these are not Yakan people, as these are two dancers from the Filipino-American dance group I am a part of called LIKHA Pilipino Folk Ensemble during a performance. Here is an image of the male person in the Yakan photo from 2023: second man from the left in black. Although the original Yakan photo in question was apparently taken in 2008, you can likely see they are the same person, but of course more confirmation can be provided if need be. They are both American, and are representing a Yakan couple in a performed dance in the photo. We don't necessarily need the photo to be removed from all these pages, as the representation of the Yakan culture to my understanding is fairly accurate, as it is based on research trips to the Yakan people. However we would like that the photo somehow be clarified as not of a Yakan tribesperson, but specifically a representation of Yakan people during a performance or by Filipino-Americans.

How can we go about 1) confirming that they (the two dancers indicated in this photo) are not of the Yakan tribe, and 2) editing the description on the wikimedia page and the uses on various wikipedia pages to more accurately reflect the nature of the photo, considering we are not the copyright holder and do not seem to know the original taker of the photo as indicated on the wikimedia page? SamuelMinioza (talk) 22:58, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@SamuelMinioza: given that the user who uploaded that photo hasn't edited Commons in over a decade, I'm going to presume there is no chance of getting hold of them. I'd say it's pretty clear just on internal evidence that File:Yakan.jpg looks like a photo of professional or near-professional dancers in performance rather than a candid photo of people simply dancing, particularly so given File:Paragua.jpg uploaded the next day by the same user. So I'd suggest that you can feel free to edit the description accordingly, and to contact the various wikis on the talk pages of the respective articles (or, if you find something actively miscaptioned, edit it yourself.)
I see you are new here, so I'll permalink your remarks above from the talk page of the photo, which can be a bit tricky to do. Let me know if there is anything else in this process with which you'd need help. - Jmabel ! talk 07:45, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MBMMedia.USA: Something like this is certainly not within the scope of Wikimedia Commons (COM:SCOPE). Something like this might belong in the English-language Wikipedia, but it would (at a bare minimum) need to be formatted into paragraphs and have inline citations. At a glance, I can't tell whether the above shows enough independent sources writing about them (and not just in passing) to establish notability. Since this isn't even the relevant website, I'm not going to spend a lot of time trying to work that out. Also, since I suspect you may be related to the subject you are writing about, do read en:WP:COI and especially, if you are being compensated by the subject of the article or someone connected to them, en:WP:Paid-contribution disclosure. If you are, indeed, connected to the subject of the article and don't do that, you are very likely to find your account blocked on en-wiki, who are very strict about this (much more so than Commons). - Jmabel ! talk 08:10, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image tagging PP template[edit]

I got permission by the copyright holder to upload some files, which I did (e.g., [3]). Now, according to the help, the copyright holder is supposed to use the Commons:Wikimedia VRT release generator to release the images. But how do I tag the images in the meantime? The help on Commons:Volunteer Response Team is of no help because it only talks about emails, instructing to use the {{subst:PP}} template, but that template only is for emails send to the orts team. How do I tag the images so that they won't get deleted before the copyright holder can release them? Thanks, Jens Lallensack (talk) 13:00, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Edit war over copyrightability of simple text[edit]

There are these image files whose content is clearly not copyrightable, at least for a great many of them: text content that doesn’t remotely meet the threshold of originality (for the ones I touched mostly “abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789” and/or “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”), set in some arbitrary font, with the images even generated by a simple computer program from the digital font file and one or two minimal user inputs. Hundreds of them are tagged with some CC license and/or GFDL, which are based on copyright. So I'd say, these license tags are stating unjustified and misleading copyright claims and should clearly be removed. Since Commons is a wiki, I invested some time just fix this myself, and am now facing angry threats, ridicule and the start of an edit war. How to proceed from here?.. Requests for comment@meta?

Also, perhaps somebody can shed some more light on the claim, whether all SVG files can have copyright protection as computer software, simply by virtue of being in SVG format, like digital font files can.

Even if we’d have to consider UK law here, we are – at most, for part of the files – talking about whether picking one background colour exceeds TOO or not. Everything else (and likely even background colour) is determined by Gürkan Sengün’s Font Specimen Creator. TOO clearly isn’t zero in the UK.--Chewzy (talk) 03:11, 11 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Chewzy: speaking as an admin here, you really can't bar a user in good standing from a discussion just because you "don't feel like dealing" with his "behavior," which appears to have consisted of reverting something that you did unilaterally with no consensus to back you. If there is somewhere his "behavior" that was actually problematic, I missed it, but you can bring it to COM:AN/U (with specific diffs to back up your claim of inappropriate behavior). - Jmabel ! talk 20:18, 10 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don’t respond well to people who threaten to call the cops, first thing, instead of listening to arguments and trying to have a productive discussion. Going on to ridicule me doesn’t help. Consider that my personal thing. I never said anything about me, in turn, wanting to “report” him. – I didn’t like his behaviour, I don’t see a productive attitude towards me. I decide who I talk to. It's my request for help here. I didn’t find him helpful; that’s part of why I’m here.
My edits didn’t strike me as actually controversial. Could I kindly ask you to try to answer my actual question here instead of just voicing your (however qualified) solidarity for Jeff G.?
It still seems pretty clear to me that those copyright claims are wrong and should be removed. So, please: How to proceed? How/where to seek consensus on this surprisingly controversial issue? Who can settle the legal questions?--Chewzy (talk) 02:26, 11 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Usually, where there is even some possibility that a user's work might be copyrighted and they've offered an appropriate license, we don't delete that license in suggesting that another might be more appropriate. For example, at File:Joanna Sans Nova sample image.svg, you might add something in the permissions section like, "Although the authors of this file claim copyright and offer a {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, it is fairly likely that this image is not eligible for copyright in most countries and can be used on a public-domain basis."
If that's not an acceptable answer to you, you can take it up at the Village pump. Please, if you do so, include a permalink to this discussion so that it is clear what has already been said. - Jmabel ! talk 06:15, 11 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I very much appreciate the very constructive answer. Chewzy (talk) 14:35, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am the person who originally raised concerns about the user unilaterally changing the licences of font samples, even though the licences were already suitable for the Wikimedia Commons: under the circumstances, Chewzy's unilateral actions felt like a form of licence laundering. It appears that font samples and simple text like "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" are two entirely different things: style vs. functionality respectively, as it appears to me. --Minoa (talk) 00:04, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I appreciate the raising of valid concerns and indeed had little awareness of Commons considering other than US legal frameworks. So far I didn’t feel like my point has been seen and addressed. To me those license tags (i.e. copyright claims) (still) seem something like reverse license laundering, if that makes sense. Neither in the text content (what you compared to “functionality”) nor in the layout, arrangement, coloring, embellishments, ... (what you compared to “style”) I can see any basis for copyright protection, even considering the given examples of UK legal cases. So I still think we should remove those copyright tags. Now, where would you have discussed something like this in order not to act “unilateral”? Chewzy (talk) 14:28, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If it is, then good job, but it seems a bit older on its face. The complexity, plus the typesetting, plus the flourish...I would say puts this is testy waters as far as claiming TOO. Is a photograph free content - specific question[edit]

Hello, I have a photograph for a living person who is the subject of the Wiki article I would like to highlight the photo in. The photo is of this person holding their daytime Emmy award. This person gave me permission in an email to use the photo, and noted that it was taken by a friend at the award ceremony in 2006 and given to her, i.e. it is not a press photo but a friend's "snapshot." If the friend who took the picture can't be located to provide permission, can it be considered free content? Karamel patti (talk) 21:32, 10 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Karamel patti: This is certainly not sufficiently free for Commons.
  1. The "friend" would own the copyright, not the person who is the subject of the photo. Also, if the Emmy statue is highly visible, that would itself produce an insurmountable copyright problem, because the statue is copyrighted, and the owners of that copyright will certainly not release rights.
  2. If the friend cannot be located, you are simply out of luck.
  3. If the friend can be located, then there are two issues that need to be resolved: (1) we need a specific free license, not just "OK, you can use this." (2) We'd pretty much need this to go through the process described at COM:VRT, where the friend (or their heir) would have to send the relevant email.
It sounds to me like you would do better to use a different photo for the article: either take one yourself, have the person take a selfie and go through COM:VRT to offer a specific license, or have them track down something where it is actually possible to get permission from the copyright-holder. - Jmabel ! talk 22:17, 10 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Additionally, I just found out that the friend who took the photo is deceased. Thanks for the info. and advice. 2601:204:4003:D440:6038:1B80:5262:765D 03:06, 11 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is there a place/page where I can post a request for an image?[edit]

I am wanting a usable photograph of the Johnston Memorial, which is located in the south-west corner of [[Category:St Marys Church, Gilston]], Hertfordshire, England. Is there somewhere on Commons or on Wikipedia itself where I can make a request for an image? The Hertfordshire Project is inactive, and the England Project would seem a bit wide. new article about a person[edit]

I wrote an article of a notable Winnebago Tribal member, and would like some help in making sure it's appropriate in every way for Wikipedia. Are there folks who do this? - Raptorrunner Raptorrunner (talk) 15:00, 11 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not really. Wikipedia is a sister project to this one. And while everyone who has a Commons account also has a Wikipedia account, that doesn't mean that all of us edit both projects or that there is any way to get feedback from one project on a different one. Krassimira Stoyanova's article and photograph[edit]

Krassimira Stoyanova is a Bulgarian Soprano: there's a page about her in 7 languages in Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krassimira_Stoyanova). She is the daughter of bulgarian composer Wesselin Stoyanow (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veselin_Stoyanov) but this is not published, although clearly stated in his Wikipedia page in Bulgarian (https://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D0%B5%D1%81%D0%B5%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%BD_%D0%A1%D1%82%D0%BE%D1%8F%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2). Moreover, there's no photograph of her, although several appear in her own website (https://www.krassimira-stoyanova.com) and others (e. g. https://www.schmopera.com/scene/people/krassimira-stoyanova/). One of these could be published, for the source is under her total control and in public view. Can you help? Thanks! Vittorio Ameglio. Unsuitable file extension[edit]

Hello. I wanted to overwrite Sierpinski_carpet_4.svg file with a 1-bit PNG because it only containts a few B&W squares that can be losslessly represented with raster, and it will be smaller (~250bytes instaed of ~2kb). But, system said "the MIME type does not match the file extension". In fact, file extensions does not need to fit the file type. For example, my music player can open MP3 files with WAV extension. But, commons seems to does not know that. I want to owervrite existing file rather than uploading a new file because the SVG version does not contains any benefits over the PNG. In PNG, the file size is much smaller, while the quality is the same. Please help me for uploading a PNG with a SVG extension, and i will be happy if these square-based fractals will be not uploaded in SVG anymore. RuzDD (talk) 00:02, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@RuzDD: Hi, and welcome. No one pixel PNG file would fit the bill. Also, please wikify your posts so people can easily look at things like File:Sierpinski carpet 4.svg, which is 2 KB. We do have File:Menger 4.PNG, which is 3 KB, but any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload a jpg version, too. Also, please understand that our systems require files to have the correct types.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:20, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
1: They would fit the bill if the resolution is correct. 2: PNG may look bad when scaled down, but SVG also will be look bad when scaled down. 3: I tried to scale up my PNG and it does not look like jaggy. Just it maybe look a bit better if it's not interpolated. 3: I am tried to wikify, but it showed the full image instead the link when i wrote [[File:Sierpinski_carpet_4.svg]]. 4: It has two (probable) reasons to be 3kb: A: it's bit depth is higher than 1-bit. B: it's resolution is very high: 245x245px while 81x81px can be perfect. 5: I think JPG will be mess up the image because JPEG is not designed to contain basic BW square-based fractals, but 1-bit PNG is way more efficient (and lossless if the correct resolution is used). 6: I understood now, so i am going to update the existing PNG. But, can we make a redirect from the SVG file with deleting that file, like in Wikipedia articles (different names of articles showing the same content)? RuzDD (talk) 00:33, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Note: Now i noticed i not have permissions to overwrite, so i uploaded Menger4-efficient.png. RuzDD (talk) 00:39, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Saperaud~commonswiki and @Meidosensei: What do you think?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:44, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  1. 1-bit != 1-pixel (resolution vs bit-depth (color number))
  2. you can create meaningful PNGs with 256 byte or less file size and even smaller webp and gif files with the same content
  3. It does not make sense to replace a file of only 2KB with a smaller file WRT MediaWiki
  4. SVG is better for these kind of content than any bitmap format (even if this is not the case for MediaWiki at this moment)
C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 08:43, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
1: If bit depth = 1bpc, 1bit~=1px in uncompressed formats. In compressed formats, 1bit > 1px. 2: I not prefer WEBP because i think it is not different from a mess. PNG or GIF is nice enough for these images. 3: I want to reduce sşze as i can due to my principles. If a smaller file provides the same quality with the bigger one, i must upload the smaller file anyway, even for a few bytes (this is in most status, sometimes exceptions being real, for example when decoding another file is faster and speed is important, but this is not from these exceptioner files). 4: SVG is the same for look, and worse than PNG at performance. SVG will want more process for rendering than PNG in ~99.9% of cases. Anyway, i will be happy if you can make a redirect from File:Sierpinski_carpet_4.svg and File:Menger 4.PNG, thanks. RuzDD (talk) 13:43, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@RuzDD: I put the colons on the left and fixed the extension for you. Syntax is important here. If you want to delete those files to make way for redirects (or in the case of the PNG, to make way for your version), please see COM:DP.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:11, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know syntax is important (i can write code on some langs), but i not know very well that wiki codes. I don't understand why mw uses the wiki lang, i think HTML and CSS are much better and easy. And, you fixed the extension: which extension? RuzDD (talk) 18:41, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Useless efficiency[edit]

@RuzDD: if you write code, then I would imagine you are familiar with the notion that you can only meaningfully gain efficiency where there is significant inefficiency. For example, it is rarely worth optimizing a portion of the code where a program spends 2-3% of its time. Similarly here: a 2KB file is, in the scheme of things nowadays, nothing. It is literally smaller than the text of this discussion. Even if you could somehow take it down to nothing, unless someone is (for some odd reason) downloading it thousands of times, you don't gain enough to be worth any trouble.

Now, if you can drop a 32MB file to 600KB without data loss visible to the human eye, that can be very worth doing.

There's nothing inherently wrong with something being made unnecessarily efficient, but if significant human time is wasted on making it so, then it is generally a wasteful thing to pursue. - Jmabel ! talk 19:25, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think that's not useless because not only high-performance computers and fast Internet connections using Wikimedia projects. Owners of very much lower capabilited computers may want to use WM projects. For example, ATmega328P has only 32KB of program ROM, 2KB of SRAM and 1KB of EEPROM. (ATmega328P is used on Arduino Uno and Nano, and Uno is the most used model of Arduino.) At this level of memory, a few bytes can change things. This also happens on performance. For example, on an Arduino, processing that SVG will be take much more time than PNG because Arduino have to think colors and shapes too much on SVG, but not on PNG because 1: Shapes used on PNGs are cannot change (they are always square, i mean pixels) 2: From the beginning of the file, ATmega knows that: this image contains only 2 colors! (I don't calculated the efficiency ratio, i hope this does not create problems. Also excuse me if i wrote things wrong because my main lang is Turkish and i don't know English very well.) RuzDD (talk) 23:17, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@RuzDD: You understand that uses of SVG files on WMF project are via PNG thumbnails, right?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:28, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, but this does not remove the problem. All PNG files are not equalivant. There are major differences between File:Menger 4.PNG and File:Menger4-efficient.png. One is 245x245px while the other is 81x81px. And, one is 1bpc while the other is at a higher bpc (i not checked but it should be higher, otherwise the file size must be lower). Also, wrong conversions can make a blurry (or unbalanced if we do not interpolate it) image. A human can solve these problems, but the MW engine does not know that. Because of this, the output of that engine is probably going to be much bigger (file size) and maybe blurry or wrong. RuzDD (talk) 13:44, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, when I upload a new crop, I chose the wrong file. That should be no problem, but I can not revert the last version. Could you please correct this. Thank you very much. Kind regards, Wikisympathisant (talk) 05:02, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This is a historical, automatically colored photo from the end of 1940. Uploader = Prof. Hidenori Watanave (https://researchmap.jp/hwtnv), University of Tokyo (https://labo.wtnv.jp/). Hi User:Jeff G., all information comes with the link https://globalvoices.org/2022/04/30/japan-officially-rebukes-ukraine-for-comparing-wartime-emperor-with-hitler-mussolini/. The s/w photo otiginal itself dates back to the Tripartite Pact (see description underneath). The photo therefore should be within the public domain. Meanwhile I mailed to H. Watanave (Cc VRT Permission Team) in order to verify the picture. Thanks for taking care, Peter Christian Riemann (talk) 16:50, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The colorization is a problem, because it may be completely speculative (it says "Automatic Image Colorization") and the black and white original is always superior to the colorized version, and the colorization by Hidenori Watanave (which could be copyrighted) is not freely licensed. I strongly suggest that if the original black and white photo could be found, to use that. Abzeronow (talk) 16:34, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello User:Abzeronow, please see my answer to User:Jeff G.... Peter Christian Riemann (talk) 16:52, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree with the original photo would be {{PD-Japan-oldphoto}} as a 1940 created photograph. The colorization has faults in my opinion, the green in the big Italian flag appears to be too dark. Abzeronow (talk) 16:59, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would agree that the original black-and-white photograph would be fine, but we would need a license for the colorization. Also that the original black-and-white photograph would be clearly within scope, while the colorization is dubious in that respect. - Jmabel ! talk 19:30, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Though I suppose that if the colorization was done by AI without significant human guidance it is {{PD-algorithm}}. Still doesn't address the question of why a colorization of this would be in scope, though. - Jmabel ! talk 19:32, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file. (for pdf)[edit]

Hi all

I'm working with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization to help them upload their publications and graphics to Commons (lots of great graphics etc). I've uploaded quite a lot of content before and I have a new error I've never seen before, please can someone help? It would be useful to know if there is an issue with the file or with the upload wizard.

When I try to upload this publication to Commons for them to then send the VRT request I get this error

Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file

Please can someone tell me what it might be? Please feel free to try to upload the file yourself and just add {{Cc-by-sa-3.0-igo}} {{subst:OP}} as the license so they can then send the permission. If it is an issue with the pdf (which opens fine on my computer and isn't too big) could someone tell me the fix?

I found a few Phab tickets with this error message but don't really understand them, also I uploaded a similar size pdf just before so I don't think its a connection issue.

Small update: I've just tried uploading a slightly compressed version using the Adobe compressor and a 'repaired' file using an online pdf repair tool, but neither fixed the issue.

Thanks very much

Hi Koavf thanks very much, the file is 27mb, so I don't think its the file size, it only takes maybe 30 seconds to upload on my pretty ok wifi connection. I'm unclear how to use chunkeduploads, from what I read on that page it appears to be automatically applied? There aren't any installation instructions. Would you mind trying to upload the file? Just so I know if its an issue I'm causing or if its either the file or Commons? It failed for me on the upload page John Cummings (talk) 07:14, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Unfortunately, this file cannot be uploaded here due to its license. If you'd like, I can upload it to https://nccommons.org/, a similar project that has no formal relationship with this site. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:18, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Koavf the licensing will be sorted out with a VRT ticket after its uploaded(I have the email for FAO to send ready to go), the VRT system allows you to upload the content before applying the VRT ticket (I think it gives you 7 days to upload the permission before the file is deleted). Please can you just try uploading it and let me know if it gets as far uploading the file successfully? Also can you think of anywhere else I can ask for technical help with this? I feel like I have a pretty rare issue. Thanks, John Cummings (talk) 07:58, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Koavf: I know John, and although he doesn't mention it here, he was the longstanding Wikimedian in residence at UNESCO, and I'm sure that if he says FAO will grant a permission via VRT he knows what he's talking about. So this is presumably a strictly technical problem in doing the actual upload. - 08:08, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Jmabel thanks so much :) Yeah I'm assuming its a technical issue, although I have no idea what... Can you suggest anywhere I could ask for help? If you could try uploading the file and see if you get the same error I'd really appreciate it :) John Cummings (talk) 08:16, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
John Cummings file is now at File:World Food and Agriculture - Statistical Yearbook 2023.pdf with a blank template. You will need to fill out all fields and address the licensing issue. @John Cummings As a workaround you can use Rillke's BigChunkedUpload. While you can upload files up to 100 MB without chunked upload, it is a workaround in cases, where normal upload does not work. see Help:Chunked upload The script allows you to set the chunk size. If upload does not work with the default setting try smaller or larger chunk sizes. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 08:39, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright Photo Taken Down[edit]

You could ask Kelly Picketrish for the reason of that omission. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 16:17, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
C.Suthorn: please remember that this is the help desk.
@Kelly Picketrish: the problem is that for images like File:The Kryptonite Sparks live at Electric Castle 2018.png and the others that were deleted, we have no automatic way to know that you represent who you say you represent. Anyone could create an account and claim to own the rights to anything. Here's what we need at this point: the copyright-holder of the work(s) in question needs to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to grant a specific license. If you are the copyright-holder, that's pretty straightforward (although if you are not the photographer, the VRT would need to see copies of the document(s) that transferred copyright to you). If the copyright is held by an organization, then it's by far best that the correspondence come from an email on that organization's domain. If a third party holds copyright, the permission must come from that third party.
Note that you can word correspondence with the VRT to set up a more open-ended permission. E.g. if you represent an organization, they can handle confidential correspondence to establish that, so that you can be trusted in the future when uploading content on behalf of that organization. Similarly, if some photographer other than you wants to designate this account as having authority to upload their copyrighted materials, they can do so.
Also in the future: often the easiest way to handle this is to specify a free license the first time the image is uploaded to the Internet. For example, if the initial upload is to a band's web page, upload it there with a clear photo credit and an explicit indication of a license like CC-BY-SA 4.0. Then, anyone can upload it to Commons by citing that page as a source. (Similarly if the initial upload is to the photographer's own site, or to Flickr, or even to social media.)
By the way, as far as I can tell, for each image you uploaded, you got a warning about the permission problem at least a week before it was deleted, and you ignored the warnings. Predictably, they were deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 19:40, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Criteria for deleting a file by a "blacklisted user"[edit]

I was looking for images to add to en:InterContinental_Shanghai_Wonderland and found several from this flickr account. I uploaded one image under CC-BY-2.0 but when trying to source it better got a message that the user was blacklisted? I can't find a specific deletion criteria that applies to this, what should I do? Thanks.

(Also, there are some other photos on this Daily Mail article - I assume all of these are no good as well because of the copyright?) Reconrabbit (talk) 16:52, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You can find why a Flickr account is "blacklisted" at COM:QFI (EDIT: their entry says "Seems to upload concept art under CC-BY-2.0 without actually having permission") Abzeronow (talk) 16:54, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The specific image in question is a photograph, though there are several drawings and renderings of the same location of questionable copyright. I don't have the expertise to say if this photo is okay to keep. I can't get a static link to the file either because the search tools give me this error. Already uploaded?[edit]

How do i figure out if I have already uploaded certain files or not? Juandev (talk) 17:05, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Juandev: Hi, and welcome. You may review Special:ListFiles/Juandev and https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/upload&user=Juandev. Anyone may review Special:MyUploads and click "upload log". You may also browse to what you would have named those files using the address bar or search for them.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:11, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
All 60k? That would be difficulut. How does the tool, which recognizes duplicates work? Can I use it? Juandev (talk) 17:19, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Juandev: Both Special:Upload and Special:UploadWizard should warn if a file you try to upload is an exact duplicate, and link to the file already uploaded.
Google Lens does a good job of finding if any given image is already online and if so where, so it can search Commons for images quite well. Unlike our own software, it will find even a scaled-down duplicate, or something with different EXIF data.
If your images are decently categorized, it shouldn't be too hard to find any given image. (A good motivation to categorize.) Assuming they are correctly attributed to yourself and you explicitly put the date in the wikitext (I'm presuming you know the date of your file, since most cameras and most file systems record that), that is also easily searched.
I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 19:58, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploads[edit]

Meus uploads foram marcados para exclusão, como posso adicionar licenças a eles? Silvana de Souza (talk) 17:45, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Silvana de Souza: Sorry to be answering in English, I read Portuguese but do not write it.
You can always add a license to an image by editing the wikitext of the file page, and adding an appropriate template. For example, you can add "{{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}" near the bottom of the page (typically above the categories) to license your own work as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}. - Jmabel ! talk 20:02, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
However, looking at the warnings on your talk page, it doesn't look like the problem has been a lack of license. It's been that you are uploading other people's work and simply asserting that you have their permission. Only the copyright-holder can provide permission. They will need to send email, as described at COM:VRT. Sadly, the Portuguese translation of that page is quite incomplete. Please at least look at COM:VRT, and if you can't understand what is needed, then let us know here and we can try to find someone to help you in Portuguese. - Jmabel ! talk 20:06, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Danke.

Hi, I would like to use the image of Vincent Novello (circa 1830's) & want to make sure that there are no problems, as I see that there are some legal issues with the image. Please advise, thanks. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vincent_Novello_by_Edward_Petre_Novello.jpg Mozartsmuse (talk) 20:42, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Mozartsmuse: Hi, and welcome. Please don't use it anywhere within reach of Scotland Yard. See User:Dcoetzee/NPG legal threat and en:National Portrait Gallery and Wikimedia Foundation copyright dispute for details.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:18, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Jeff, thanks so much for your reply. I'm an author & this business with image purchases, etc. is driving me crazy. I'm so thankful for Wikipedia & Wikipedia Commons. Thanks! Mozartsmuse (talk) 21:42, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What is the rule on adding football badges to Wikimedia Commons and in turn Wikipedia?[edit]

According to Wikimedia, you aren't allowed to add logos that aren't yours to Wikipedia, but every team has a badge on Wikipedia. I have a PNG of the new Ulsan HD FC logo and I would like to add it to Wikipedia. Marshy djh (talk) 00:00, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Marshy djh: Please don't confuse Commons with the English-language Wikipedia. Unlike Commons, the English-language Wikipedia makes quite a few allowances for non-free use: see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content.
If the logos are simple enough (e.g. just text and very simple geometry) they may be too simple to be copyrighted. If they are very old (dating back to the dawn of association football) they may have fallen out of copyright. Other than that, or the unlikely case where a copyright-holder might free-license such a thing, they don't belong on Commons. The rest is an internal en-wiki matter. See en:File:Chelsea FC.svg for a good example; note that does not involve Commons at all. - Jmabel ! talk 00:10, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Fair use photo for a player like Julie Halard-Decugis[edit]

We have a tennis article at Wikipedia on Julie Halard-Decugis. There are no photos on her page because we can find no public domain images of her. She won the US Open tennis title in doubles in 2000 plus several other titles in her career in the 1990s but she is long since retired. When I look at a website like [4] I see photos of Julie Halard-Decugis and I know they are copyrighted, even though they don't say so. Must we have an article on wikipedia with no photo at all, or is there some way we can use one of these photos as fair use, say in either the infobox or perhaps in prose where we have a sentence describing her win? I'm not sure exactly how fair use works in this case as I usually have just uploaded my own personal photos here. We have many older tennis players with this situation and I need to be advised on how the fair-use works for Wikiproject Tennis. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 00:22, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • This is an issue for Wikipedia. No "fair use" of 3rd party copyrighted material here on Commons. English language Wikipedia allows it in some circumstances, see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content - note that if so it would need to be uploaded locally to en:Wikipedia, not here. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 00:54, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • However, I believe there is almost no chance en-wiki will accept a "fair use" image of a living person. They'll say, "Get hold of them. Take their picture." - Jmabel ! talk 02:44, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yup. Or possibly "Send her to a North Korean prison." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:44, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I'm told some editors have had some success contacting article subjects and asking if they are willing to "donate" a picture. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:47, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template:Month by year in Vitoria-Gasteiz[edit]

Hi there. There seems to be something wrong with {{Month by year in Vitoria-Gasteiz}}. It categorizes Category:December 2023 in Vitoria-Gasteiz into Category:December 2023 in Álava-Araba, but then it is not possible find it there. If only someone could help me solve the issue. Thanks in advance. Alavense (talk) 09:39, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wizard upload not always working[edit]

For a week, I get error messages using the upload wizard: "Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file." I cannot always the classic upload because some files are over 100 mb Smaxims (talk) 10:09, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

See Commons:Chunked uploads and you can use tools such as User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js. That will almost always fix the issue. —Justin (koavf)TCM 10:31, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
